NATIONAL NEWS
1. VPFS Council Appointments
In November 2010 a review of the RAC Field Organization was begun to
review and reform the Amateur Radio Emergency Service. I am pleased
to announce the following appointments:
Garry Jacobs VE6CIA, Alberta Section Manager, as Chairman of the
"Mission" working group, advised by Doug Mein VA3DM.  Allan Boyd
VE3AJB, Ontario Section Manager, as Chairman of the "Training
Specification" working group, advised by Ian Snow VA3QT.  James King
VE3ETZ as Chairman of the "Census" working group.  And, Peter Wetton
VA3PRW as Secretary.
My thanks to all for agreeing to assist with this important
project.

2. Teslin Special Event
Special Event Station VY1T will be on the air from June 29 to
July 1, for the Grand Opening of Aeradio Exhibit at the Teslin
Historical and Museum Society in Teslin, Yukon.
On June 29th VY1T will be operated by VY1EI from Whitehorse. On June
30th VY1T will be on the air from Teslin Yukon, at the George Johnson
Museum, from early morning to late afternoon, or 14.180 or 14.140
MHz. On July 1st  VY1T will be on the air from Whitehorse as a club
station.

3. ARISSat-1 Deployment February 16
The space walk to deploy ARISSat-1 from the International Space
Station is scheduled for February 16th.  The satellite contains a
software defined transponder that will provide a 70cm up, 2m down
service plus a range of telemetry, FM, CW and BPSK transmissions. For

4. Codec 2
Codec 2 is an open source alternative to both D-Star and P25 that's
being developed by a group of volunteers all around the world.  The
idea behind Codec 2 is to provide a single, free, software-based
digital voice encode and decode system that would not require any
proprietary firmware as is found in most other current digital voice
systems.  More about Codec 2 is on-line at Codec2.org
