NATIONAL NEWS

1. Quebec Section Emergency Coordinator appointed

Effective immediately, Normand Pitre VE2NHK, of Saint Zotique QC, is
appointed Section Emergency Coordinator for the Quebec Section. He
recently earned his RAC Certified Emergency Coordinator designation,
and is eager to chat with any members of the Quebec Section that
might have an interest in establishing a new ARES unit. Welcome
Normand.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

2. World Amateur Radio Day

On April 18 we celebrate World Amateur Radio Day. This year's theme
is "Amateur Radio Satellites: Celebrating 50 Years in Space" to
commemorate the launch of OSCAR 1 on December 12, 1961 and the
launch of OSCAR 2 on June 2, 1962. IARU Member Societies will
operate the following special event stations:

6H6IARU by the Federación Mexicana de Radio Experimentadores,
operated by Grupo DXXE, will be active from 13 to 18 April in all
modes and bands. QSL via LoTW and N7RO, direct or bureau. Daily logs
uploads will be available in ClubLog.

3G87IARU by the Radio Club de Chile, will be active throughout the
month of April. QSL via CE3AA.

LZ1WARD by the Bulgarian Federation of Radio Amateurs also will be
active throughout the month of April. QSL via bureau.

3. Titanic Special Event Station

From April 6 to April 26, special event station GB100MGY will operate
on all amateur bands, CW and SSB, from Fort Perch Rock Marine Radio
Museum, New Brighton, Wirral, U.K. This is to mark the 100th
anniversary of the Titanic disaster. Overnight on 14th-15th of April,
the date Titanic was sunk, we will operate mainly on 502 kHz CW, the
band where the Titanic made her distress call.

We have special permission to operate GB100MGY on the 501-504 kHz
band from April 12th to April 18. Those without a 500 kHz band
licence can make a crossband QSO on 3566 khz or 7066 kHz as
propagation conditions permit. We are hoping conditions are suitable
for a "pond hop" to East coast area of Canada. For more information

4. Morse Code Special Event

New York's QSY Society Amateur Radio Club will host a special event
station at the Samuel F. B. Morse Estate in the city of Poughkeepsie,
to celebrate his creation of the Morse Code in 1832. Call sign K2QS
will operate CW from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm Eastern Time on Saturday
April 14th, centered on 7.034 and 14.034 MHz. QSL requests go to

5. City of Ottawa Relaxes Antenna Rules

The city of Ottawa has compromised with radio amateurs regarding
antenna restrictions. Personal antennas may be erected in front or
side yards in urban or suburban neighbourhoods as long as they're
shorter than 15 metres, less than three inches across and set back at
least 1 1/2 metres from property lines. Bigger antennas would require
public consultations so neighbours can have their say.
