NATIONAL NEWS
1. Reminder: Simulated Emergency Test
The Simulated Emergency Test (SET) is a North America-wide exercise
in emergency communications, involving both the Amateur Radio
Emergency Service (ARES) and the National Traffic System (NTS).
Canada's SET is Saturday, October 15. In Ontario an additional
session will be held on Wednesday, October 12.
A successful SET will get as many involved as possible, especially
new hams. For the rules and guidelines, visit the RAC website at

2. "Foodstock" needs radio operators
On Sunday, October 16th, the "Foodstock" gathering to support
Ontario farmland is expected to draw a crowd of 20,000 north of
Shelburne. Dufferin County ARES has been asked to provide
communications, and needs more amateur radio volunteers.
The event will run from 11 am to 5 pm, and operators are needed from
9:30 to 6:30. If you can help for all or part of that period, please

3. Hamilton Hamfest
The Hamilton Amateur Radio Club will hold its annual hamfest on
Saturday, October 15, at the Ancaster Fair Grounds, 630 Trinity Road,
in Ancaster. That's the south-west corner of highways #52 and #53.

4. Reminder: Jamboree On The Air
A reminder: the 2011 Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) will be held 15-16
October. If you haven't made contact with your local Scouting group,
there's still time to offer help. For more information about this

5. Nominations Open for Humanitarian Award
Nominations are open for the 2011 ARRL International Humanitarian
Award. This award is conferred upon an amateur or amateurs, anywhere
in the world, who demonstrate devotion to human welfare, peace and
international understanding through Amateur Radio.
Nominations and supporting materials must be submitted in writing,
in English, by December 31st, to ARRL International Humanitarian
