Welcome to the September 2010 edition of the Radio HF Internet Newsletter. Well, another late distribution of the Newsletter this month. I honestly don’t know where the time is going. The summer is wrapping up here in eastern Canada, with the daylight hours diminishing quickly and even a few traces of colours, other than green, appearing in some of the trees.
September will be a very busy month for amateur radio fleamarkets for me as well. Beginning on Saturday, the 11th, I have three consecutive Saturday events, in Carp, Ontario, Montreal and Drummondville, Quebec. If you’re going to be in attendance at any of these events, please drop by the Radio HF exhibit to say hello. It’s always great to meet up with some of our subscribers, face to face. Details of the events appear in the Hamfest/Fleamarket Zone below.
Our Monthly Special Zone features websites about U.N. International Day of Peace, POW/MIA Appreciation Day, International Coastal Cleanup Day and National One Hit Wonder Day.
Our virtual voyage around the world, in the “Where in the World Zone”, this month takes us to new heights, elevation wise. We head to the HimalayanMountains for a stop in Nepal. Officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia. It is located in the Himalayas and bordered to the north by the People's Republic of China, and to the south, east, and west by the Republic of India. With an area of 147,181 square kilometres (56,827 sq mi) and a population of approximately 30 million, Nepal is the world's 93rd largest country by land mass and the 41st most populous country. Kathmandu is the nation's capital and the country's largest metropolitan city.
Let’s get to our listing of interesting sites this month. Please take a few minutes to send along one or two of your favourite webpages to share with our subscribers..

THE MONTHLY SPECIAL ZONE
THE UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE
The International Day of Peace ("Peace Day") provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. It was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly.
VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY
POW/MIA Recognition Day honors the commitments and the sacrifices made by our nation's prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action. By custom, it is on the third Friday in September.
INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP DAY
Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup engages people to remove trash and debris from the world's beaches and waterways, identify the sources of debris, and change the behaviors that cause marine debris in the first place. Join us this September 25: Sign up for a Cleanup near you and get involved today!
ONEHIT WONDER CENTRAL
National One Hit Wonder Day is September 25th. Onehitwondercentral.com is the brainchild of web developer and music trivia buff, Dan Thompson. The site found its origin in a compilation of Thompson's favorite tunes, many of which he had not heard in years. Thompson made an inquiry into the songs and their respective creators, finding that no site offered a comprehensive listing of them. So he envisioned his own site, enlisting Josh Hoff in his cause. Hoff, who researches and writes biographies for the artists, also assists in the development of overall content.
ORIGIN OF GOOGLE
September 7, 1998 marked the anniversary of the founding of Google. Ever wonder how it became to be known as “Google”. Read about it here.

THE RADIO ZONE
OLD RADIOS
VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec
A gratuitous site to document and share Greg Cooney’s, of Wellington, New Zealand, collection of early radio memorabilia and the part period radio shack, part museum, that houses them. Also a tribute to the 'boatanchor' valve receivers, early N.Z radio literature, vacuum tube (valve) & box collections plus unusual & novelty crystal sets and radio batteries etc.
RADIO RECORDINGS OF AA5TB
VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec
On this page Steve Yates, AA5TB, of Fort Worth, Texas has links to some of his recordings that he has made over the years, organized by category. The recordings are of amateur signals, intruders within the amateur bands, broadcast, or natural phenomenon.
COURAGE CENTRE HANDI-HAM SYSTEM
VIA Kevin Carey, Bloomfield, New York
The Courage HANDI-HAM System was "born" in Rochester, Minnesota in 1967; the idea of Ned Carman, W0ZSW. Ned worked for a clinic, and, in the course of his work, would visit people with severe physical disabilities. As he spoke with his clients, who often had few opportunities to leave their homes, he realized that Amateur Radio would be the perfect hobby for them. Here was a hobby that could open a window to the world! A person with the most severe disabilities could stand as an equal with fellow hams in the world of Amateur Radio!
SURFING THE RADIO WAVES
VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec
A decent portable receiver and simple antenna allows everybody to discover the sounds, noises and mysteries of the Airwaves. Believe me: there is still life on Shortwave! And many, many mysteries, says Manolis of Crete, Greece, who maintains this blog.
THE INTERNATIONALCENTER FOR ACCESSIBLE RADIO TECHNOLOGY
VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec
Welcome to the InternationalCenter for Accessible Radio Technology (ICART) – a collaborative effort between NPR and TowsonUniversity. ICART’s mission is to design and advocate for accessibility features to be included as radio broadcasting accelerates the global transition to digital transmission. As we like to say: “Accessible design is good universal design”
GLOBAL MARITIME DISTRESS & SAFETY SYSTEM
VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec
We will show you the basic concept of the GMDSS, its background and history, radio equipment requirements and how the system affects not only large commercial vessels, but also recreational craft. We will also discuss flaws in the system - and offer some solutions.
UVB-76
VIA Keith Perron, Taipei, Taiwan
This is a page focusing on the strange shortwave transmission known as the “Russian Buzzer” station. It is heard on 4625 kHz. in the AM mode, and has been heard for decades. The true purpose of the station has never been determined, but it has attracted a lot of attention, particularly of late when Russian talk, background chatter and even occasional music have been heard in on the station. Everyone loves a good mystery!
RADIO TELETYPEWRITER AN/GRC-46
VIA Kevin Carey, Bloomfield, New York
For anyone interested in electro-mechanical Teletype machines and how they worked, I ran across a 26 min. training film on the AN/GRC-46, made in 1963.
ARMY MORSE CODE VIDEO
VIA Kevin Carey, Bloomfield, New York
Morse code is long gone from the military services, but back in the day...
How did the Army introduce Morse code to a class of prospective radio operators? This early film shows us how.
BERNIE TAUPIN’S AMERICAN ROOTS RADIO
VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec
You’ll need to have Sirius/XM Satellite radio to get the optimum use out of this webpage. Songwriting partner of Elton John, Bernie Taupin has put together this excellent music show on “The Loft” channel on Siriux/XM. If you like rare recordings, eclectic musical selections and historical background into music and its artists, this show will be for you. Just check out the playlists for previous shows and you’ll see what I mean. To me, this is worth the cost of satellite radio per month alone.

ODDIO OVERPLAY
VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec
Oddio Overplay is predominantly a catalog of neat-o websites that offer legal and free sharing of music. It began in 1994 as the music division of the now defunct Boxy. The primary purpose of this site is to connect artists and audiences. Artists who want the world to hear their music offer it online for free. This music is completely legal for a listener to download and enjoy. Oddio also refers visitors to music archives, such as the United States Library of Congress, Opsound, free netlabels and the Internet Archive, that are using the Internet to allow the public to access their sound resources.
EXPEDITION TITANIC – RETURN TO THE DEEP
VIA Richard Sim, GooseBay, Labrador & Newfoundland
A team is exploring the depths of the ocean, visiting the scene of the wreck of the Titanic. Join them, virtually, through this website. Slow Internet hook-ups may get hung up on this Flash heavy site.
CP-140 AURORA
VIA Jerry Proc, Toronto, Ontario
From the original purchase of eighteen CP-140 aircraft, ten have been selected to complete the AIMP modernization program and will continue to remain in service until their replacements are procured around 2020. The remaining eight CP-140s and two CP-140As are earmarked for retirement. Navigating through the complexities of the Aurora’s past and present systems would have been impossible for me had it not been for the assistance received from Captain Stephanie Hale, Navigator-Communicator Standards Officer, 14 Wing Greenwood, NS. and Ernie Cable Associate Air Force Historian and ShearwaterAviationMuseum Historian.
PRINCEWILLIAMSOUND REGIONAL CITIZENS’ ADVISORY COUNCIL
VIA Gerry Brookman, Kenai, Alaska
The Prince William Sound Regional Citizens’ Advisory Council was formed after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 to provide a voice for communities affected by oil industry decisions in Prince William Sound, the Gulf of Alaska, and Cook Inlet. The council is an independent non-profit organization whose mission is to promote environmentally safe operation of Alyeska Pipeline’s Valdez Marine Terminal and associated oil tankers.
COOK INLET REGIONAL CITIZENS’ ADVISORY COUNCIL
VIA Gerry Brookman, Kenai, Alaska
On March 24, 1989, the oil tanker, Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef in Alaska’s Prince William Sound. The ill-fated tanker spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into the water and created an environmental disaster that ranks among the worst in the history of North America. The incident also changed forever the way crude oil is transported in the United States. Congress wanted to insure that the sense of complacency that led to the spill in Prince William Sound would not be repeated in the future. Under OPA 90, two regional citizen advisory councils were created - one for the Prince William Sound area and one for Cook Inlet. Congress envisioned the councils as a mechanism to foster long-term partnerships between industry, government, and the coastal communities of Alaska.
NATURE NORTH'S NARCISSE SNAKE DENS
VIA Daniel Gillet, Winnipeg, Manitoba

The spring viewing season is over for 2010, but stay in touch for the fall return of the snakes. It's about a one hour drive north from Winnipeg to the Narcisse Snake Dens.

WHALES IN SPACE
VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec
WhalesInSpace.com is about pushing the edges of belief. We all have limits to what we believe is possible. Some people’s limits stop with hard physical provable science, some peoples limits stop with religion, most people combine paradigms and systems, lumping religions, sciences and their own feelings and experiences into a blend of how and what they accept as reality. So the site is dedicated to the weird and wonderful, the paranormal and odd, science and magic and everyone who has ever seen, heard, known, or felt something that can not be explained by the ordinary.
WEIRD N’ODD
VIA Sheldon Harvey, Greenfield Park, Quebec
The name says it all. Weird and odd stories are gathered from sources around the world and presented here.
