09-06 (June 10th) Meeting Report
Primary tabs
I'll start off with Sunday June 7th the Patrick 4 Life Fun Walk/Run. This is an absoutely great event and a very enjoyable one. It was a good day. Not too hot to create problems and cool enough to keep the bugs away. There were about 777 participants registered for the various sections. There were 2K, 5K, 10K and the 1/2 marathon. Our main interest was the 1/2 marathon. This went from Lee Park all the way out the Kate Pace Way to Cranberry Drive and back. In attendance were Paul VA3PC, Doug VA3DLJ, Evelyn VE3MAA on her bike, Gerry VE3YO, Dan VE3DLL, Dan VE3YUI, Bill VA3WAC, Lori VE3LOR, Bill VA3SPT roving, Tim and Samantha Silver, and myself. While the first walkers for the 1/2 marathon started at 0730ET the main start was at 0800ET. The last walkers were back by 1100ET. There was a nice lunch for all the participants afterwards. All went well and there were no problems at all. This is a fun event and all had a great time.
Now for the June Meeting Report....
The meeting was called to order about 1945 by President for Life Bill VA3SPT. The following hams were in attendance. Evelyn VE3MAA, Doug A3DLJ, Paul VA3PC, Chris VE3YYB, Keeling VE3XKB, Jim VE3KAN, Lori VE3LOR, Howard VE3GMG, Bill VA3WFS, Bill VA3WAC, Bill VA3SPT (no in this case there aren't too many BILLS), Dan VE3YUI and his MUCH better half Cindy.
1) Correspondence:
The TRANS CANADA TRAILS day is still in the works. They are wondering if we can provide a HF link to PANAMA as there is another trail typ event going on down there at the same time. Bill VA3SPT is looking into what is required.
The NORTH BAY TRIATHALON is Sunday June 28th. We need 8-10 people to help out. This is a special request for help as due to vacations and work we are down a few members. Bill VA3SPT will be setting it up but won't be able to help. This is a good time to come out and see what it is all about. Please either sign up on the web site http://ciinet.org/nbarc or drop Bill a line at silver@ontera.net. He really needs help with this one.
FIELD DAY. Due to the conflict with the Triathalon and the absence of members we won't have a Field Day station this year. We will be trying again next year.
SUNDRIDGE TRIATHALON. Sundridge is holding a triathalon August 16th called The Sundridge Lake Bernard Challenge and we have been approached to help. Bill VA3SPT is still looking into it to see what is required and if we can provide assistance.
2) NETS.
The 2M net is still going strong. We are still trying to get over to Dave's VE3GTM to see if we can get a better antenna set-up. Unfortunately work and life keep interfering.
the 80M net is going well. Paul VA3PC is unavailable to run it for the next few weeks due to prior commitments so listen for a different controller depending on the week. Keep checking in and see if the controller can keep up. It is hard to replace Paul.
3) ARES.
The next CEMPC meetng is being held July 16th. Bill VA3SPT is giving a presentation on ARES.
The ARES/NBARC trailer is still at Bill's VA3SPT place.
4) REPEATERS.
Paul VA3PC put a circulator in at VE3NFM in an attempt to get rid of the interference. It didn't appear to help. He feels that the tower, which is very old is probably creating problems due to corrosion at the bolts and joints. We are going to have to replace the back-up battery as the current one is cracked.
VE3ERX appears to be functioning well. Paul VA3PC reset the time and hopefully it will be more accurate. Both IRLP and Echolink are working well.
5) EVENTS.
The MS walkathon May 7th went very well and everyone had a great time.
Patrick 4 Life is reported as above.
Summer in the Park. Keeling VE3XKB reported that the new pedestrian underpass under the rail yards is supposed to open July 28th in time for the long weeken event. It looks like it is coming along well. Take a quick look the next time you are at the waterfront. Dan Weller is replacing Shawn Devine. Keeling VE3XKB is looking for help Friday July 24th to move stuff to the trailer nd get started on the set-up. If you can help please show up at Keelings 185 Pearce St. about 0830ET if you can help. Call him at 476-1126 or kb.little@cogeco.ca and let him know you are coming. Bill VA3SPT is going to move the ham trailer in July 26th or 27th with the big trailer coming on July 28th. Go to http://www.checkpost.ca/summer and you'll find the times Keeling has scheduled people. Please keep him updated if things change or you can volunteer a few extra hours.
LOST IN THE ROCKS AND TREES. July 18th. This is a GREAT event and the food is good as well. We need people. Again ... Please either sign up on the web site http://ciinet.org/nbarc or drop Bill a line at silver@ontera.net.
MATTAWA CANOE RACE. July 25th (the next weekend). We did this event for the first time last year and although it was wet it was an ELECTRIC EVENT (Yup. MASSIVE thunderstorms). We need people. AGAIN again) ... Please either sign up on the web site http://ciinet.org/nbarc or drop Bill a line at silver@ontera.net.
I'll have more on these two events as time goes on.
6) RAC.
Paull VA3PC puts all the bulletins on the NBARC website. He also has a link to the RAC Blog http://racblog.wordpress.com . Look under Web Links menu on the top of the page. BILL118 the cellphone bill has been passed into legislation. The regulations under the Highway Traffic Act will be out in the fall. Check the NBARC website for links where you can comment. The more comments we get the better off we are. This could very easily impact and restrict how we use our radios in the future especially with ARES and emergency conditions. RAC is fighting very hard to get Amateurs an exemption and they need every amateur to comment and every member they can get. If you are not a RAC member please sign up. RAC is our national body. Mention our club code #23 when you sign up.
Well I think that is about it for the moment. I'll try to keep you updated over the summer. Please log into the NBARC website (the link is listed below) and sign up for the newsletter. When you are receiving them let me know and I'll drop you from my personal list. With slow dial-up it takes a while to send these sometimes. The other benefit is that I won't accidentally lose your e-mail address (like happened once).
