3) Here is the report on the Triathalon as received from Bruce VA3BDR.
The NBARC participated in the North Bay Triathlon Event June 28, 2009, by providing our usual excellent communication services. The triathlon is held at Olmstead Beach on Trout Lake. The Triathlon is a 1 km swim, 34 km bike ride, and 8.4 km run.
Len Gushe of Mattawa was first to cross the finish line in the annual North Bay Triathlon, Sunday morning, at Olmsted Beach. The 46-year-old veteran triathlete completed the one-km swim, 34-km bike and 8.4 km run in an unofficial time of one hour, 30 minutes, 44 seconds, some 7 minutes ahead of his nearest competitor.
NBARC members included:
1. VA3STX Bernie manned the command post Checkpoint #1 at the waterfront at Olmstead beach and had to circulate back and forth from his truck to his handheld in the park. He had a lot of loud music to compete against.
2. VA3BDR Bruce manned Checkpoint #2 at the corner of Lees Road and Highway 63. Later on this checkpoint was assisted by the one NB Police officer on duty today.
3. VE3GMG Howard was at Checkpoint #5 at Tower Drive and Smith Road.
4. VE3YO Gerry was at Checkpoint #7 at the corner of Northmount Rd. and Carmichael Drive.
5. VA3WAC Bill was at the turnaround for the bike ride at approximately 850 Widdifield Station Road Checkpoint #12. When al l the bike riders had cleared this checkpoint Bill repositioned to the turnaround for the run portion near the eastern end of Anita Avenue.
There was one incident during the race when several riders coming back down Lees Road at the last curve bumped one another and one rider went down. He suffered a broken collar bone and unknown injuries to his leg and a severe case of road rash. VA3BDR talked to the injured rider and concluded the rider required an ambulance. Rather than communicate the need for an ambulance through NBARC and the event committee, VA3BDR requested Constable Wall to request an ambulance at the location. The ambulance crew was some time addressing his injuries at the location. He was taken to the North ay General Hospital.
VA3BDR supplied information on the downed rider to VA3STX who passed it to the event committee. A request for a pickup of the bicycle was also transmitted.
There were the usual drivers that didn’t believe we should be stopping or directing traffic, and drove around the stopped line of cars and totaled disregarded the riders, putting a number of riders in harms way.
The event was over about noon.
All together, another service provided to a non profit organization in the community by the efforts of a number of members of NBARC, Well done.
