NATIONAL NEWS

1. New ARES logos

Tyler Tidman VA3DGN has designed new logos in both official
languages for use by all ARES/SURA members and groups. The black
and yellow is suitable for caps, shirts, crests etc, while the black
and white lends itself well to print form. They are available in a

2. Iroquois Fleamarket

On Saturday, April 7, the Iroquois Amateur Radio Club will hold its
16th Annual Fleamarket, at 1 Dundas in Iroquois. Take exit 738 from
the 401. General admission is free and starts at 9 am. Talk-in on

3. IRLP Topic Channels

Beginning in March 2012, the Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP)
will host IRLP Topic Channels. Nearly 3000 IRLP nodes worldwide can
connect to thirty "reflectors" for group discussion. Twenty
reflector channels are being designated for specific topics, like DX,
sports, history, and movies. While IRLP is the backbone of the
system, some topic channels will provide access via Echolink and
other VOIP systems. For more information on using IRLP visit

4. Next WRC to Discuss 5 MHz

At the 2012 World Radiocommunications Conference, it was agreed to
discuss a permanent 5 MHz amateur allocation at the next conference
in 2015. The band being proposed is 5.250 to 5.450 MHz. The
International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) worked hard to get support
for putting this item on the agenda, after it failed to make the
WRC-12 agenda.

5. VA3OOG to Command the ISS

The BBC reports that astronaut Chris Hadfield, VA3OOG, will be the
first Canadian to command the International Space Station. Hadfield
will travel to the ISS near the end of this year, and will serve as a
flight engineer in the Expedition 34 crew. Then, in March 2013, he
will assume command of Expedition 35 for three months before
