ARRL Adopts Mobile Radio Policy The American Radio Relay League's Executive Committee has adopted an updated Policy Statement on Amateur Radio mobile operation. The policy cites Amateur Radio's 70-year history of two-way mobile operation as evidence that such radio use does not contribute to driver inattention. And it points out that Amateur Radio operation differs from cell phone communication, in part because the device need not be held to the face to listen, no text messaging is involved, and mobile ham operators only need to pick up a microphone to make "brief and infrequent" transmissions. -- ARRL Web 4. JOTA founder passes away The founder of Jamboree-on-the-Air, Les Mitchell, G3BHK, died on 6 October. Les started JOTA in 1958, after launching the idea a year earlier at the World Scout Jamboree. That was the first year the Jamboree had an amateur radio station on site, and it has had one every year since. -- RSGB News 5. B-64 Balloon Still Floating The B-64 balloon, launched by Leo Bodnar M0XER on July 12th from the United Kingdom, is still aloft and on air transmitting on 434.500 MHz, using both Contestia 64/1000 and APRS. On October 3rd, Phil Heron MI0VIM reported decoding data from B-64 while it was over the North Atlantic ocean, coming up to the 6th time it would pass the U.K. on its continuing journeys around the world.
