1. A New Public Information Officer
We are pleased to announce that Mr. Jim Sutton, VE4SIG, has
successfully completed the ARRL Public Relations course and may be
the first Canadian to do so. The new field organization structure
recognizes the need for such officers in each region, to raise the
profile of Amateur Radio.
Any ARRL member can take the course, for free, by downloading it
from their website.

1. Nominations Sought for RAC Executive
The two-year terms of all RAC Executive positions will expire on
December 31, 2011. This includes the President, Treasurer, Corporate
Secretary and all the Vice-Presidents. These positions are appointed
by the Board of Directors, and RAC is inviting nominations for all
positions.

1. RAC Annual General Meeting
The RAC Annual General Meeting (AGM) has been scheduled for Saturday,
July 30 at 1:30 pm.
For the first time in RAC's history the AGM will be held in historic
St. John's, Newfoundland and will be held in conjunction with Hamfest
NL 2011 hosted by the Society of Newfoundland Radio Amateurs. The
event will be at The Battery Hotel & Conference Center on historic
Signal Hill.

1. ARES Mission Statement Adopted
After recommendation from the RAC Field Organization National
Secretariat and the Vice President Field Service Council, the Section
Managers have approved Mission and Vision statements for RAC ARES:
Mission - "The mission of the RAC/ARES is to be an effective partner
in emergency and disaster response by providing emergency managers
and responders with radio communications expertise, capability and

1. ARES ID Cards On The Way
To those who have been waiting for new or updated ARES ID cards: due
to an unexpected illness, our supplier had to briefly suspend
operations. Operations have resumed, the backlog has been cleared,
and cards have been shipped to RAC. Upon their arrival their
shipment to you will be expedited. Thanks for your understanding!

1. Killarney District ARES report
Manitoulin/North Shore ARES has added Pat Dopson VE3HZQ, as an
Assistant Emergency Coordinator, in charge of technical matters. The
group has been asked to assist the organizers of an Air Show that is
to be held on Manitoulin Island in September.
On May 29 some members of Sudbury ARES and the Sudbury radio club
provided emergency communications during the annual MS Walk. Thanks

1. Ontario Distracted Driving Appeal
Bill Unger, VE3XT, RAC Director Ontario North/East, is co-ordinating
the drive to exempt Amateurs in Ontario against the Distracted
Driving legislation (Bill 118). He needs letters of support from
third party groups and organizations. If you help with
communications for any group or are part of an emergency response
procedure for your community, please ask them for a letter.

James Davidson, VE3TPZ, has offered his services as a temporary Net
Manager for the Ontario Phone Net, effective June 1. James will

1. NTS is not ARES
Recently there has been some confusion that the National Traffic
System (NTS) is part of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES).
This is not the case. NTS and ARES are separate branches of the RAC
Field Organization. They report, respectively, to the Section
Traffic Manager and the Section Emergency Coordinator. Overseeing
both are the Section Manager and the Vice President for Field

NATIONAL NEWS
1. Slave Lake Emergency Frequencies
The Alberta ARES groups responding to the Slave Lake fire request
that 3.675 MHz, the primary frequency, and 7.135 MHz, the backup, be
kept clear for disaster-related traffic.
ARES is supporting the Slave Lake EOC and the Provincial Operations
Centre until commercial power is restored to the EOC and
communication systems. As of May 18th fires are still out of control
and the risk still exists for communication outages.
